Nikhil Pereira Kamath

Nikhil Lawrence Pereira-Kamath has over 15 years of experience in the dialysis space having previously run a non-for-profit organization, Youth That Care, whose mission was to provide assistance to the developing world via the establishment of dialysis centers. Youth That Care established dialysis centers across India and the first dialysis center in Burundi. Nik Co-Founded Africa Healthcare Network in 2015 with the goal of increasing access to care by increasing awareness and reducing the cost of care in the Sub-Saharan region while adhering to global standards of quality.

Previously, Nik worked in the private equity industry as an associate at Berkshire Partners, a Boston based investment firm with $11.0Bn+ in AUM. At Berkshire, Nik engaged in all aspects of the investment process, including Berkshire’s $2.1Bn acquisition and subsequent merger of Lightower Fiber Networks and Sidera Networks in 2013 and $875MM acquisition of the Portillo’s Restaurant Group in 2014. Additionally, Nik was a member of the Healthcare OnPoint Team – a core investment team that focuses on “getting smart” on the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Berkshire, he was an analyst at Morgan Stanley in the Healthcare Group where he focused primarily in biopharmaceuticals and healthcare services. Transactions at Morgan Stanley include the sale of Pharmasset to Gilead Sciences for $11.1Bn, sale of HealthDataInsights to HMS Holdings for $400MM, sale of Pharmaceutical Product Development to Carlyle and Hellman & Friedman for $3.9Bn. Prior to Morgan Stanley, he worked at Oxford Bioscience Partners where he worked as a research analyst, covering a portfolio company, FlowMedica. He holds a patent with Harry Goodson IV, Jeffrey Elkins and Samir Patel for the “Treatment Systems and Methods for Renal-Related Diseases”.

Dr.Clarke came to uganda in 1987 and setup kiwoko Mission hospital, In 1996 he setup international medical centre which has Since grown to the organization international medical group (Img), The Largest private healthcare organization in uganda, Encompassingaone Hundred bedhospital (Ihk), Iaa Medical insurance company, Imf Anon-Profit foundation And Imcsanet work of 22 primary careclinics. Ihk Is The Only Cohsasa Accredited Hospital In Uganda.

During April 2011 - April 2016, Dr.Clarkeservedas the Mayor of Makindye Division, one of the fiveadministrative units of Kampala. He is current lyaboar dmember of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda, the East Africa Healthcare Federation,and the Africa Healthcare Federation.

Dr. Clarke has authored three books–“The Man with the Key has gone’,'How Deep is this Pothole’, and' Smart Culture Guide to Uganda’. He writes a weekly social commentary column for the New Vision Newspaper, one of twomain national news papers in Uganda.

Ms. Jacqui Stewart

The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa NPC

Jacqui Stewart is the Chief Executive Officer of The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa NPC (COHSASA). She has worked in the public and private health care sectors in South Africa and England. Having qualified as a registered nurse in Cape Town she went on to specialise in Cardio-Thoracic nursing at the London Chest Hospital in London England. She ran the Heart Transplant Unit at Harefield Hospital, Middlesex for five years. From there she moved into a variety of managerial roles in the National Health Service at district, regional and national level. First within the nursing directorate in quality improvement and then in capital and service planning. She was involved in the inception of the purchaser / provider split in the NHS.

He serves as Deputy Chairman of SAMCC and is also the Chairman of the IPA Foundation of SA and Chairman of Kwa Zulu Natal Doctors Healthcare Coalition.

Professor Morgan Chetty serves as associate Professor to the Department of Research, Johannesburg University of Technology and was awarded the Fellowship of Family Physicians by the College of Medicine of SA – 2013 – FCFP(SA). In 1993 – 1994 he was awarded the Fullbright – Humphrey scholarship and completed his MPH in the USA.

He has written two books on Managed Care and is a speaker at National and International Conferences on a regular basis and writes for the Medical Chronicle. Prof. Chetty was appointed on the NHI Technical Task Team [GP Contracting] in South Africa. He is now on the Board of OHSC (Office of the Health Standards Committee) – appointed by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi. In addition, he has been appointed on to the Advisory Committee on Partnering with patients – ISQUA (International Society of Quality Assurance) and as an ISQua Expert in 2018.

Professor Morgan Chetty has presented on PCC at the ISQua London Conference and previously at the Paris meeting, where he presented on Quality of Care in developing countries. He has coordinated and presented on PCC at the Africa Health Conference and the KZNDHC Conference. He has written numerous articles on PCC, its impact on Quality and Cost and the methods to measure PCC programs.

He has been the recipient of a number of awards for leadership in Healthcare. Amongst these awards are the Titanium Award by the BHF for Leadership in Healthcare and the Discovery Health Life Time Achievement Award for work on Quality of care

Professor Chetty’s interests are: Patient-Centered Care and Quality in Healthcare. He serves on the PCC Committees in SA and also serves on the ISQua African Committees Program.

Biju Mohandas

Head, Health & Education, SSA & Global Sector Lead, Medical Devices

Biju Mohandas is an emerging markets investor with close to two decades of investing and operational experience in South Asia and Africa. He has directly led equity, quasi equity and debt transactions totaling c.$300 million as well as acquisitions and distressed asset turnarounds in healthcare, education, agribusiness and renewable energy sectors. As a director on corporate boards and investment and advisory committees in multiple markets, Biju has a track record of working with co-investors and management to develop and execute long term strategies, improve performance, structure turnarounds and of using his international experience and relationships to structure partnerships between global strategies and emerging markets companies. He is fascinated by the potential of technology to disrupt the delivery of shareholder and consumer value in healthcare and education sectors and spends his spare time studying this space.

In his current role Biju heads the Health and Education investment team for the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Sub Saharan Africa. He is also their Global Sector Lead for Medical Devices. Biju and his team currently manage a c. $200 Million portfolio across 17 companies in these sectors in Sub Saharan Africa and will invest $70-80 million annually for the next three years to more than double assets under management. Before IFC, Biju was the East Africa Director of Acumen fund and was responsible for their East Africa related investments, operations and business development activities. He has an MBA from the Indian School of Business majoring in Analytical Finance and also served in the Indian Army.

Trevor Lovell

Professional Architect and Managing Director at Graceland Architects

Trevor Lovell is a Professional Architect and Managing Director at Graceland Architects. He has 15 years’ professional architectural experience in both public and private healthcare sectors. Trevor firmly believes that the successful development of a comprehensive PPP ecosystem in the context of the NHI will be critical to providing truly universal, quality healthcare.

He is currently involved in researching current PPP models and understanding where these have succeeded and where further work must be done to improve outcomes at small, medium and large scales.

His involvement with several paediatric-based projects highlights his interest in paediatric healthcare design. Recently completed projects include a Paediatric Transplant Unit; Paediatric Surgical Out Patient Department and Anorectal Clinic; and a Paediatric TB Exit Ward at the King Dinizulu Level 1 District Hospital, KZN.

Current projects include a Lactation Unit at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, a partnership project between the Gauteng Department of Health, a Non-profit Organisation and Private Funding.

Ashleigh is an actuarial director at Deloitte and leads the social security, healthcare and advanced analytics practice, Actuarial & Analytical Solutions at Deloitte.

Ashleigh started her career as an actuarial assistant at Hannover Life Re in 2000, having completed a Bachelor of Business Commerce degree at the University of Pretoria. Upon qualifying as an actuary in 2004, Ashleigh joined Deloitte as a consulting actuary. In 2008 Ashleigh was appointed as a director/ partner. Here she provides strategic advice to government departments, medical schemes, service providers and companies. These services assist clients in linking and executing their operational initiatives with their strategic vision.

Ashleigh served as the Minister of Health’s appointed actuary to the board of the Council of Medical Schemes for a period of 3 years ending November 2014.During this period Ashleigh started to build the advanced analytics practice within Deloitte.

Dr. Sarah Byakika

Commissioner Health Services, Planning, Financing and Policy

Sarah Byakika is the assistant commissioner for quality assurance in the Ministry of Health in Kampala. She is involved in the development of minimum standards of health care and quality assurance in the health sector and coordinates overall health sector monitoring and evaluation. She formerly worked as a district health manager in Jinja District. She holds a fellowship in continuous quality improvement from Makerere University, School of Public Health, an M.Sc. in community health and health management from the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery from Makerere University.

Dr. Ola Brown

Founder The Flying Doctors Nigeria

Dr Ola Brown is a medical doctor, a trainee helicopter pilot and an entrepreneur who founded West Africa’s first indigenous air ambulance service, the Flying Doctors Nigeria ( which saves hundreds of lives across the West & Central African region every year especially in the oil and gas industry, rendering medical evacuation services. She is extremely passionate about healthcare in Africa and works with various businesses, charities and governments to improve standards of healthcare.

Dr Ola studied medicine and surgery at the Hull York Medical School after which she worked in Acute Medicine in the UK. She then went on to be awarded the Japanese MEXT scholarship which allowed her to further her studies in Tokyo, Japan. Her post-graduate areas of study include Pre-hospital Emergency care, Healthcare leadership and Healthcare delivery.
She has a certificate in Economic policy making from IE business school, Spain and a certificate in Accounting for decision making from the University of Michigan in the United States. Along with two other directors, Dr Ola runs leading early stage venture capital firm, Greentree investment company which provides growth capital to some of Africa’s most exciting tech start-up’s.
Greentree Investment company has invested in start-up’s in various sectors including fintech, media, SaaS, Agri-tech, manufacturing, ecommerce, health tech and Edutech making it of West Africa’s leading venture capital firms.
She has published three books ‘EMQ’s in Paediatrics’, ‘Pre-Hospital Care for Africa’ and ‘Fixing Healthcare in Nigeria; a guide to healthcare policy. She has also written articles in the British Medical Journal, the Journal of Emergency Medical Services, the Niger Delta Medical Journal, the New York Times and the Huffington Post.
She is an international speaker who has spoken at the TED global conference, the European Union, the Swiss Economic Forum, the UN, the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge University and the Aspen Ideas Festival. Dr Ola and her work have been featured by CNN,the BBC, Forbes and Al-Jazeera.
She has also received multiple awards and nominations. These include the Mouldbreaker’s Award, the THIS Day Award, The Future Award as entrepreneur of the year, New Generation Leader for Africa, Ladybrille Personality of the month, Silverbird entrepreneurship award, Nigerian Aviation personality of the year award and Vanguard WOW Awards. She is also a TED fellow, an Aspen Fellow and has been honored by the world economic forum as a Young Global Leader.
She is a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, international editor of the Journal of Emergency Services and a LinkedIn top ten global Healthcare Writer. Dr Ola Brown (Orekunrin) also sits on the board of the professional women's network (Lagos Chapter), she also sits on the committee of the British Business Group (Lagos).

Dr. Sarah Byakika

Commissioner Health Services Planning, Financing& Policy, Ministry of Health, Uganda

Public Health Specialist and Health Services Manager with vast experience of working in the public health sector starting as a Medical Officer in a Regional Referral Hospital, a District Health Officer and moved on tothe national level starting as Assistant Commissioner Quality Assurance and currently Commissioner Planning, Financing and Policy. She is also the Focal Person for the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme in Uganda.

Sarah has taken lead in development of various policies and national strategic plans for the health sector in Uganda. These include the Health Financing Strategy for Uganda which led to the development of the National Results Based Financing Framework in Uganda in preparation for health insurance.
